What Is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is one electric system that both heats and cools your home, so you don't need a separate furnace and air conditioner. Rather than burning fuel like a traditional furnace, it simply moves existing heat from one place to another.


In winter, it pulls heat from the outdoor air and carries it inside. In summer, it reverses the process, pulling heat from your home and releasing it outdoors, just like a central air conditioner. One unit, every season, controlled from your thermostat.



A complete system has a few core parts: an outdoor unit (compressor and coil), an indoor unit (coil and blower), refrigerant, and your thermostat and controls. Air-source heat pumps, the type we install most often across Chicagoland, draw on the outdoor air to keep your home comfortable.

How a Heat Pump Works​

Heat pumps move heat instead of making it, which is why they're so efficient; relocating heat takes far less energy than generating it. The system uses refrigerant and electricity to carry warmth in whichever direction you need: indoors when it's cold, outdoors when it's hot. A modern heat pump can deliver up to three units of heating or cooling for every unit of electricity it draws, making it one of the most cost-effective comfort systems you can install today.​

The part that makes it possible: the reversing valve.​

The reversing valve is what turns an air conditioner into a true heat pump. Mounted near the compressor in the outdoor unit, it changes the direction refrigerant flows, sending heat outside in cooling mode and indoors in heating mode. Without it, the system could only run one way.​

Good to Know

If a heat pump heats but won't cool (or vice versa), short cycles, makes clicking or hissing sounds when switching modes, or blows lukewarm air, the reversing valve may be the culprit. Caught early, it's a straightforward fix, which is why annual service matters.​
